A Qualitative Approach to Localization and Navigation Based on Visibility Information
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we describe a model for navigation of an autonomous agent in which localization, path planning, and locomotion is performed in a qualitative manner instead of relying on exact coordinates. Our approach is grounded in a decomposition of navigable space based on a novel model of visibility and occlusion relations between extended objects for agents with very limited sensor abilities. A graph representation reflecting the adjacency between the regions of the decomposition is used as a topological map of the environment. The visibility-based representation can be constructed autonomously by the agent and navigation can be performed by simple reactive navigation behaviors. Moreover, the representation is well-qualified to be shared between multiple agents.

In this paper we present our advances in a data structure, the Gap Navigation Tree (GNT), useful for solving different visibility-based robotic tasks in unknown planar environments. We present its use for optimal robot navigation in simply-connected environments, locally optimal navigation in multiply-connected environments, pursuit-evasion, and robot localization. The guiding philosophy of thi...
متن کاملFeature-based localization using scannable visibility sectors
This paper presents methods for navigating and localizing mobile robots in a known indoor environment. We introduce a restricted visibility concept called a scannable sector that can aid many existing navigation and localization algorithms. The scannable sectors are based on the physical characteristics of the environment and the limitations of the localization sensors used. We describe a compl...
متن کاملLocalization, Exploration, and Navigation Based on Qualitative Angle Information
Three of the major problems in qualitative spatial reasoning and robotics are localization, exploration, and navigation in known or unknown environments. This paper investigates how far different qualitative methods based on angle information, most of them originally invented for the representation of spatial knowledge only, are well-suited for these tasks. It turns out that with panoramas, whi...
